Come to Rough Point for a different kind of mansion experience! Our famous topiary camels and panoramic ocean view will greet you as you enter the only Newport Gilded Age estate with a modern, lived-in feel and a world-class art collection.

Once known as “the richest girl in the world,” Doris Duke inherited Rough Point, along with a vast fortune and several other properties, at the age of 12 in 1925. Her father was James Buchanan (“Buck”) Duke, tobacco and energy tycoon, and like him, Doris Duke loved art. In 1958 she relocated the family art collection from New York to Newport, and almost sixty years later her passion for beauty and place are still felt throughout the house and grounds at Rough Point.

Doris Duke was a collector herself and a philanthropist, and she intended from early on to have Rough Point opened for public enjoyment. In the luxurious interiors of the first and second floors, paintings by Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Renoir; Baroque and Rococo sculpture; Renaissance tapestries; and Ming ceramics are among the main attractions. The grounds and gardens are spectacular, too, and from the vast lawn laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, you can appreciate the full elegance of the house originally designed ca. 1890 by Peabody and Stearns for Frederick W. Vanderbilt and expanded in the 1920s by Horace Trumbauer for the Duke family.

Extra for 2017: Explore the history of the grounds, alongside fashion, art, and furnishings inspired by the natural world in our special exhibition, Nature Tamed in the Landscape, Gardens, and Collections of Rough Point.
